And Job, adding still, said in his preface:

Who will set me as in the months before, in the days when God guarded me?

when his lamp shone over my head, when by his light I walked in darkness

when I was abounding in my ways, when God was making oversight of my house

when I was exceedingly leafy, and my boys were around me

when my paths were poured out with butter, and my mountains were poured out with milk

when I went out early in the morning into the city, then my seat was set in the broad places

When the young men saw me, they hid themselves; and all the elders stood.

And the nobles ceased speaking, laying a finger on their mouth

And those hearing me blessed me, and their tongue was stuck to their throat.

For an ear heard and blessed me, and an eye seeing me turned aside

For I rescued the poor from the hand of the powerful man, and I helped the orphan who had no helper.

The blessing of one perishing came upon me, and the mouth of the widow blessed me.

And I had clothed myself with righteousness, and I had wrapped judgment like a double garment.

I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.

I was a father to the powerless, and the case which I did not know I searched out.

And I broke the jaws of the unjust, and from between their teeth I snatched the prey.

And I said, My age shall grow old like the stem of a palm tree; I shall live for a long time.

My root is spread out over water, and dew shall lodge in my harvest.

My glory is new with me, and my bow will go in his hand.

They heard me and gave heed; and they kept silent at my counsel.

But at my word they did not add, and they became very glad whenever I spoke to them.

As thirsty earth awaiting the rain, so these my speech

If I smiled toward them, they did not believe it, and the light of my face did not fall away.

I chose out their way and sat as ruler, and I camped like a king among the mourning, as one comforting the afflicted
