And Jephthah the Gileadite was mighty in strength, and he himself was the son of a harlot woman, and Gilead begot Jephthah to him.

And Gilead’s wife bore him sons, and the sons of the wife grew up, and they drove out Jephthah and said to him, You shall not inherit in our father’s house, because you are the son of another woman, a prostitute.

And Jephthah fled from before his brothers and dwelt in the land of Tob, and men who were in need gathered themselves to Jephthah, and they went out with him

And it came to pass after days, and the sons of Ammon made war with Israel

And it came to pass when the sons of Ammon were making war with Israel, that the elders of Gilead went to take Jephthah from the land of Tob.

And they said to Jephthah, Come, and you shall be for us as leader, and let us fight against the sons of Ammon.

And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, Did not you hate me and drive me out from my father’s house and send me away from you? And why is it that you have come to me when you were afflicted?

And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthae, Have we not now come to you, and you will go with us and we will fight against the sons of Ammon, and you will be to us as head for all who dwell in Gilead?

And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, If you turn me back to fight with the sons of Ammon, and the Lord hands them over before me, I will be to you as head.

And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, The Lord will be the one hearing between us, if not according to your word so we will do.

And Jephthae went with the elders of Gilead, and they appointed him over them as head, as leader, and Jephthae spoke all his words before the Lord in Mizpah

And Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon, saying, What is there between me and you, that you have come to me to fight against me in my land?

And the king of the sons of Ammon said to the messengers of Jephthae, Because Israel took my land in his ascent out of Egypt, from Arnon as far as Jabbok and as far as the Jordan; and now return them with peace.

And the messengers returned to Jephthah, and Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon

saying, Thus says Jephthae: Israel did not take the land of Moab and the land of the sons of Ammon

In their going up out of Egypt, but Israel traveled in the wilderness as far as the Red Sea and came as far as Kadesh

And Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, I will pass through your land, and the king of Edom did not listen; and also he sent to the king of Moab, and he was not willing; and Israel stayed in Kadesh.

And he went through the wilderness and went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab and came toward the east of the sun, the land of Moab, and they encamped beyond Arnon and did not enter into the border of Moab, because Arnon was the border of Moab.

And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of Heshbon, the Amorite, and Israel said to him, I will pass through your land to my place.

And Sihon was not willing to let Israel pass through his borders, and Sihon gathered all his people and encamped at Jassa, and he fought with Israel.

And the Lord the God of Israel gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and he struck them, and Israel inherited all the land of the Amorite who was dwelling in the land.

And he inherited all the border of the Amorite, from Arnon and as far as Jabbok, and from the wilderness and as far as the Jordan.

And now the Lord the God of Israel has driven out the Amorrite from before his people Israel, and you shall inherit it for yourself?

Will you not possess what Chemosh your god gave you to possess? And all that the Lord our God gave to possess before us, we will possess them.

And now are you not better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he not fight a fight with Israel, or in warring did he wage war against them?

in the house of Israel, in Heshbon and in its daughter towns, and in Jazer and in its daughter towns, and in all the cities that are by the Jordan, three hundred years; why, then, did they not deliver them in that time?

And I have not sinned against you, but you do evil with me by making war against me; the Lord, the judge, today will judge between the sons of Israel and between the sons of Ammon.

And the king of the sons of Ammon did not listen, and he did not listen to the words of Jephthah, which he sent to him.

And the spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he crossed through the land of Gilead and Manasseh, and he crossed through the lookout of Gilead and from the lookout of Gilead to the other side of the sons of Ammon

And Jephthah vowed a vow to the Lord and said, If you will indeed give the sons of Ammon into my hand,

And it shall be that whoever comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the sons of Ammon, then he shall be for the Lord, and I will offer him up as a whole burnt offering

And Jephthah crossed over to the sons of Ammon to wage war against them, and the Lord gave them into his hand.

And he struck them from Aroer and as far as the coming into Semoith, twenty cities, as far as Abel of vineyards, a very great blow; and the sons of Ammon were turned back from before the sons of Israel.

And Jephthah came to Mizpah, to his house, and behold, his daughter was going out to meet him with tambourines and dances; and she was his only one, beloved; and he had no son or daughter besides her.

And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he tore his garments and said, Alas, my daughter, you have brought me low, you have become a stumbling block in my eyes, and I have opened my mouth concerning you to the Lord, and I shall not be able to turn back.

And she said to him, My father, if you have opened your mouth to the Lord concerning me, do to me according to what has come out of your mouth, because the Lord has done vengeance for you from your enemies, from the sons of Ammon.

And she said to her father, and do this word for me: let me alone two months, and I will go and go down onto the mountains and I will weep over my virginity, I and my companions.

And he said, Go, and he sent her away for two months. And she went, she and her companions, and she wept over her virginity on the mountains.

And it came to pass after the end of two months that she returned to her father, and Jephthah fulfilled his vow which he had vowed, and she knew not a man, and it became a statute in Israel

from year to year the daughters of Israel went together to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year
