And the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of testimony, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying:

Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of their names, by their heads, every male

from twenty years old and upward, every one going out in power of Israel, count them by their forces, you and Aaron; count them.

And with you there shall be each one according to the tribe, the leaders of each, according to the houses of their fathers they shall be.

And these are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.

of Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai

of Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab

of Issachar, Nethanel son of Sogar

of Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon

of the sons of Joseph, of Ephraim, Elisama son of Emiud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Phadassur

of Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni

of Dan, Ahiezer son of Amisadai

Of Asher, Pagiel son of Ochran

Of Gad, Elisaph son of Raguel

of Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan

These are the summoned of the congregation, the rulers of the tribes according to their families, captains of thousands of Israel.

And Moses and Aaron took these men who had been summoned by name

and they gathered all the congregation on the first of the second month of the year, and they registered them by their generations, by their families, by the number of their names, from twenty years old and upward, every male by their headcount

as the Lord commanded Moses, and they were enrolled in the wilderness of Sinai

And the sons of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, were according to their genealogies, according to their peoples, according to their fathers’ houses, according to the number of their names, according to their heads, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out in the force.

Their enrollment from the tribe of Reuben: forty-six thousand and five hundred

For the sons of Simeon, by their families, by their clans, by the houses of their fathers’ lineages, by the number of their names, by headcount, all the males from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out in the army,

The number of them, from the tribe of Simeon, was fifty-nine thousand and three hundred.

For the sons of Judah, according to their families, according to their clans, according to the houses of their fathers, according to the number of their names, by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out in the force

Their census from the tribe of Judah: seventy-four thousand and six hundred

for the sons of Issachar according to their families, according to their peoples, according to the houses of their paternal lines, according to the number of their names, by their head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out in the host

for the sons of Manasseh, according to their kinships, according to their peoples, according to their fathers’ houses, according to the number of their names, according to their heads, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out in the army

their numbering from the tribe of Manasseh was thirty-two thousand and two hundred

for the sons of Benjamin, by their families, by their peoples, by their houses of their fathers, by the number of their names, by their head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out in the force

Their census from the tribe of Benjamin: thirty-five thousand and four hundred

For the sons of Gad, according to their generations, according to their peoples, according to the houses of their fathers’ families, according to the number of their names, according to their heads, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out in the army

their mustering from the tribe of Gad: forty-five thousand and six hundred and fifty

for the sons of Dan according to their kinships, according to their peoples, according to the houses of their fathers’ families, according to the number of their names, by their head, all males from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out in the army

their census from the tribe of Dan was sixty-two thousand and seven hundred

for the sons of Asher, by their kindreds, by their tribes, by the houses of their fathers, by the number of their names, by their heads, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out in the army

Their registration, of the tribe of Asher, was forty-one thousand and five hundred.

For the sons of Naphtali, by their kinships, by their peoples, by their paternal houses, by the number of their names, by head, all males from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out in the army

Their enrollment, from the tribe of Naphtali: fifty-three thousand and four hundred

This was the enrollment that Moses and Aaron and the leaders of Israel enrolled: twelve men, one man for each tribe, one for each tribe of their ancestral houses.

And all the census of the sons of Israel, with their host, from twenty years old and upward, everyone going out to be drawn up in battle array in Israel.

But the Levites from the tribe of their fathers were not enrolled among the sons of Israel

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying

Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, and their number you shall not take among the sons of Israel

And you shall appoint the Levites over the tent of the testimony and over all its utensils and over all that is in it; they shall carry the tent and all its utensils, and they shall minister in it; and around the tent they shall encamp.

And when the tabernacle is being taken down, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is being set up, they shall set it up; and the stranger who approaches shall die.

And the sons of Israel shall encamp, each man in his own order and each man according to his own command, with their forces.

But the Levites shall encamp opposite the Lord round about the tent of witness, and there shall not be sin among the sons of Israel; and the Levites themselves shall keep the guard of the tent of witness.

And the sons of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron; so they did
