And the whole congregation, having lifted up, gave a voice, and the people were weeping all that night.

And all the sons of Israel were grumbling against Moses and Aaron, and all the assembly said to them, Would that we had died in the land of Egypt or in this wilderness, if only we had died.

And why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall in war? Our wives and our children will be for plunder. Now therefore it is better for us to turn back to Egypt.

And they said one to another, Let us appoint a leader, and let us turn back into Egypt.

And Moses and Aaron fell on their face before all the congregation of the sons of Israel.

And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, of those who had spied out the land, tore their garments.

And they said to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, The land that we surveyed is very, very good.

If the Lord chooses us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that is flowing with milk and honey

But do not become rebels from the Lord, and do not fear the people of the land, for they are food for us; for their time has departed from them, but the Lord is among us. Do not fear them.

And all the congregation said to stone them with stones, and the glory of the Lord appeared in a cloud over the tent of testimony before all the sons of Israel

And the Lord said to Moses, How long will this people provoke me, and how long will they not believe me in all the signs that I performed among them?

I will strike them with death and destroy them, and I will make you and your father’s house into a great nation and much greater than this

And Moses said to the Lord, and Egypt will hear that by your strength you brought up this people out from among them.

But also all who dwell upon this land have heard that you are Lord among this people, who appear eye to eye, O Lord, and your cloud stands over them, and in a pillar of cloud you go before them by day, and in a pillar of fire by night

and you will destroy this people as one man, and the nations who have heard your name will say, saying

because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, he laid them low in the wilderness

And now let your strength be exalted, Lord, as you said, saying,

The Lord is long-suffering and very merciful and true, taking away lawless acts and injustices and sins, and by cleansing he will by no means cleanse the guilty, repaying the sins of fathers upon children to the third and fourth generation

Forgive the sin of this people according to your great mercy, just as you were gracious to them from Egypt until now.

And the Lord said to Moses, I am gracious to them according to your word.

But I live, and my name is living, and the glory of the Lord shall fill the whole earth.

for all the men who saw my glory and the signs which I did in Egypt and in this wilderness and tested me this ten times and did not listen to my voice

Truly they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, except their children who are here with me, as many as do not know good or evil, every younger one inexperienced in these things; to these I will give the land, but all those who provoked me shall not see it.

But my servant Caleb, because there was another spirit in him and he followed after me, I will bring him into the land into which he entered, and his offspring shall inherit it.

And Amalek and the Canaanite are dwelling in the valley; tomorrow turn back yourselves and depart into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.

And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, saying:

How long shall I bear with this wicked congregation, which they themselves grumble against me, the grumbling of the sons of Israel, which they grumbled about you, I have heard?

Say to them, As I live, says the Lord, surely just as you have spoken in my ears, so I will do to you.

In this wilderness your bodies shall fall, and all your visitation, and your men counted from twenty years old and upward, as many as grumbled against me

Surely you shall not enter into the land over which I stretched out my hand to settle you on it, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun

And the children whom you said would be for plunder, I will bring them into the land, and they shall inherit the land from which you turned away.

And your corpses shall fall in this wilderness.

And your sons shall be feeding in the wilderness forty years, and they shall bear your harlotry until your corpses are consumed in the wilderness

According to the number of the days that you spied out the land, forty days, a day of the year you shall receive your sins, forty years, and you shall know the wrath of my anger

I, the Lord, have spoken; surely I will do thus to this evil assembly, this one gathered together against me in this wilderness: they shall be consumed there, and there they shall die.

And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land and, having come, murmured against it before the congregation to bring out evil words concerning the land

And the men who spoke evil against the land died by the plague before the Lord.

And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh lived from among those men who had gone to spy out the land.

And Moses spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, and the people mourned greatly

And they rose early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, Behold, here we are; we will go up to the place of which the Lord said, for we have sinned.

And Moses said, Why is it that you transgress the word of the Lord? It will not go well for you.

Do not go up, for the Lord is not with you, and you will fall before the face of your enemies.

For the Amalekite and the Canaanite are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword, because you turned back disobeying the Lord, and the Lord will not be among you.

And they, forcing their way, went up to the top of the mountain; but the ark of the covenant of the Lord and Moses did not move from the camp

And the Amalekite and the Canaanite who were dwelling in that mountain came down and routed them, and cut them down as far as Hormah, and they returned to the camp.
