And there was a great multitude of livestock for the sons of Reuben and for the sons of Gad, a very great multitude; and they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and the place was a place for livestock.

And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad came near and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the rulers of the assembly, saying:

Ataroth and Dibon and Jazer and Nimrah and Heshbon and Elealeh and Sibmah and Nebo and Beon

the land which the Lord handed over before the sons of Israel is a land for cattle, and your servants have cattle

And they were saying, If we have found favor before you, let this land be given to your servants as a possession, and do not bring us across the Jordan.

And Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben: Your brothers are going into war, and you will sit here?

And why do you turn aside the minds of the sons of Israel so as not to cross into the land that the Lord gives them?

Did not your fathers do so when I sent them from Kadesh Barne to inspect the land?

And they went up to the Valley of the Cluster and considered the land, and they turned aside the heart of the sons of Israel so that they should not enter into the land which the Lord gave them

And the Lord was enraged with anger on that day and swore, saying:

Surely these men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and above, who know the evil and the good, shall not see the land that I swore to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, for they did not follow after me fully.

except Caleb son of Jephunneh, the one set apart, and Joshua the son of Nun, because he followed after the Lord

And the Lord was angry with anger against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation who were doing the evil things before the Lord was consumed.

Behold, you have risen up instead of your fathers, a brood of sinful men, to add still to the anger of the wrath of the Lord against Israel

For you will turn away from him, to add yet to leave him in the wilderness, and you will sin against all this congregation.

And they came near to him and said, Sheepfolds we will build here for our livestock, and cities for our goods.

And we, armed and as a guard before the sons of Israel, until we bring them to their place, and our baggage shall dwell in walled cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

We shall certainly not return to our houses until the sons of Israel are distributed, each to his inheritance.

and let us no longer inherit among them from beyond the Jordan and farther, because we are receiving our allotments beyond the Jordan, on the east side

And Moses said to them, If you do this according to this word, if you arm yourselves before the Lord for war,

And every armed man of you shall cross over the Jordan before the Lord until his enemy is utterly destroyed from before him.

and the land shall be subdued before the Lord, and afterward you shall return, and you shall be guiltless before the Lord and before Israel, and this land shall be to you for a possession before the Lord

But if you do not do so, you will sin before the Lord, and you will know your sin when evils overtake you.

and you shall build for yourselves cities for your little ones and folds for your cattle, and what goes out from your mouth you shall do

And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad said to Moses, saying, Your servants will do as our lord commands.

Our baggage and our wives and all our livestock shall be in the cities of Gilead

But your children shall all pass over armed and drawn up before the Lord for the war, as the Lord says.

And Moses established for them Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and the leaders of the ancestral houses of the tribes of Israel

And Moses said to them, If the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad cross over with you the Jordan, every one armed for war before the Lord, and you shall subdue the land before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as a possession.

But if they do not cross over armed with you into the battle before the Lord, then you shall bring over their goods and their wives and their livestock before you into the land of Canaan, and they shall be allotted a share with you in the land of Canaan.

And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad answered, saying, As much as the Lord says to his servants, so we will do.

We will cross over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, and you shall give us our possession beyond the Jordan.

And Moses gave to them, to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben and to the half of the tribe of Manasseh, sons of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorrites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and the cities with its borders, cities of the land all around.

And the sons of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer

and Sephar and Jazer, and they built them up

and Nabran and Beitharan, fortified cities, and sheepfolds

And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kiriathaim

and Beelmeon, having been surrounded, and Sebama, and they named the names of the cities that they built according to their names

And the son of Machir, son of Manasseh, went to Gilead and took it and destroyed the Amorite who was dwelling in it

And Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he dwelt there.

And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took their villages, and he named them Jair’s villages.

And Nabau went and took Kanaath and its villages, and he named them Naboth from his own name.
