Every friend will say, I have become a friend, and I too; but there is a friend only in name, friend only.

Is there not sorrow unto death, a companion and friend turning into enmity?

O evil thought, whence have you rolled in to cover the dry land with deceit?

A companion of a friend rejoices in gladness, and in a time of affliction he will be opposite him.

A companion pities a friend for the sake of the belly; in the face of war he will receive a shield.

Do not forget a friend in your soul, and do not be unmindful of him in your possessions.

Every counselor lifts up counsel, but there is one counseling for himself

Guard your soul from a counselor, and know beforehand what his need is, for he will also counsel for himself, lest he cast a lot upon you

and should say to you, Your way is good, and he will stand opposite to see what will happen to you

Do not take counsel with the one who looks askance at you, and from those who envy you hide counsel.

With a woman about her rival, and with a coward about war, with a merchant about exchange, and with a buyer about selling, with an envious man about thanksgiving, and with a merciless man about kindness, with a lazy man about every work, and with a hired worker who has yearnings about completion, with an idle servant about much work—do not attend to these for any counsel.

But rather keep company with a godly man, whom you would recognize as keeping the commandments, whose soul is according to your soul, and if you stumble, he will share your pain with you.

And establish the counsel of the heart, for there is not for you one more faithful than it.

For a man’s soul is accustomed at times to report more than seven lookouts sitting on a height at watch.

And over all these things, beg the Most High that he may direct your way in truth.

The beginning of every work is a word, and before every action, counsel.

The trace of a changed heart makes four things arise

Good and evil, life and death, and the tongue is ruling over them continually.

There is a man who is shrewd, a discipliner of many, and to his own soul he is useless.

There is one becoming wise in words, this one is hateful; he will fall short of all nourishment.

For it was not given to him from the Lord, because he was deprived of all wisdom.

There is a wise man to his own soul, and the fruits of his understanding are faithful on the mouth.

A wise man will discipline his own people, and the fruits of his understanding are faithful.

A wise man will be filled with blessing, and all who see him will call him blessed.

The life of a man is in the number of days, and the days of Israel are innumerable.

The wise man among his people will inherit faithfulness, and his name will live forever.

My child, in your life test your soul and see what is evil for it, and do not give it that.

For not all things are beneficial for all, and not every soul takes pleasure in everything

Be not greedy in every luxury, and be not poured out over foods.

For in many foods there will be sickness, and greediness will come near as far as cholera.

Because of greed many have died, but the one who pays attention will add life.
