But how shall I be able to receive it from him, and he does not know me, and I do not know him? What sign shall I give him so that he may recognize me and trust me and give me the silver? And I do not know the roads to Media to go there.
Then Tobit, answering, said to Tobiah his son: He gave me his handwriting, and I gave him handwriting, and I divided it in two, and we each took one, and I put it with the silver; and now behold, twenty years have been since I deposited this silver, I myself; and now, child, seek for yourself a trustworthy man who will go with you, and we will give him wages until you come, and receive this silver from him.
But Tobias went out to seek a man who would go with him into Media, one who knew the way. And he went out and found Raphael the angel standing opposite him, and he did not know that he was an angel of God.
And he said to him, From where are you, young man? And he said to him, From the sons of Israel, your brothers, and I have come here to work. And he said to him, Do you know the way to go to Media?
And he said to him, Yes, many times I have been there, and I know by experience and I know all the roads; many times I went to Media and lodged with Gabael our brother, who lives in Rages of Media, and it is a journey of two days from Ecbatana to Rages, for they lie in the mountain.
And he said to him, Wait for me, young man, until I go in and tell my father, for I have need that you should go with me, and I will give you your wages.
And he said to him, Behold, I am waiting; only do not delay.
And Tobias went in and indicated to Tobith his father and said to him, Behold, I have found a man of our brothers, of the sons of Israel. And he said to him, Call the man to me, so that I may know what his family is and from what tribe he is and whether he is trustworthy, so that he may go with you, child.
And Tobias went out and called him and said to him, Young man, your father is calling you. And he went in to him and Tobias greeted him first and said to him, Greetings to you; may it happen many things. And Tobias answered and said to him, What more is there for me still to be greeting? And I am a weak man in the eyes, and I do not see the light of heaven, but in darkness I lie, like the dead who no longer behold the light. I am alive among the dead; I hear the voice of men, and I do not see them. And he said to him, Take courage; near beside God is to heal you. Take courage. And Tobias said to him, Tobias my son wishes to go into Media. If you are able to go with him and bring him, I will give you your wage, brother. And he said to him, I will be able to go with him, and I know all the ways; and often I have gone into Media, and I have gone through all its plains and its mountains, and I know all its ways.
And he said to him, Brother, of what family are you, and from what tribe? Show me, brother.
And he said, What need have you of tribe? And he said to him, I want to know the things according to truth, whose son are you, brother, and what is your name?
And he said to him, I am Azarias, son of Ananias the great, of your brothers
And he said to him, In good health may you come, and being saved, brother, and may you not be bitter toward me, brother, because I wanted to know the truth and your homeland, and you happen to be a brother, being also of a noble and good lineage. I knew Ananias and Nathan, the two sons of Semelios the great, and they also went with me to Jerusalem and worshiped there with me, and the brothers were not deceived. You are a good man from a good root, and in joy may you come.
And he said to him, I give you as wages for the day a drachma and the things due to you likewise as to my son
And go with my son, and I will still add to your wages.
And he said to him, I will go with him, and do not fear; we will depart in good health, and in good health we will return to you, because the way is safe. And he said to him, May a blessing be to you, brother. And he called his son and said to him, Child, prepare the things for the journey and go out with your brother, and may the God in heaven bring you safely through there and restore you to me in good health, and may his angel accompany you with salvation, child. And he went out to go on his way, and he kissed his father and his mother, and he said to him, Tobit, go in good health.
And his mother wept and said to Tobith, Why is it that you sent away my child? Is he not himself the staff of our hand, and he himself goes in and goes out before us?
Silver by silver, let it not precede; but let it become as the scrapings for our child.
Since life has been given to us by the Lord, this is enough for us
And he said to her, Do not concern yourself; our child will go in health, and in health he will come to us, and your eyes will see on the day when he may come to you in health.
Have no concern; do not fear about them, sister, for a good angel will go with him, and his way will prosper, and he will return in good health
And she was silent, weeping
