They passed through an uninhabited desert, and they pitched tents in trackless places.
They resisted enemies and defended themselves against foes.
They thirsted and called upon you, and water was given to them from a rocky cliff and a remedy for thirst from a hard stone.
For by the very things by which their enemies were punished, by these things they themselves, being in want, were benefitted.
Instead of a perennial spring, a river was troubled with blood-stained water.
As a rebuke of the decree that kills infants, you gave them abundant water unexpectedly
by showing through that thirst then how you punished the adversaries
γὰρ ἐπειράσθησαν καίπερ ἐν ἐλέει παιδευόμενοι ἔγνωσαν πῶς μετ᾿ ὀργῆς κρινόμενοι ἀσεβεῖς ἐβασανίζοντο
For when they were tried, though being disciplined in mercy, they learned how, when judged with wrath, the ungodly were tormented.
For these you tested as a father admonishing, but those you examined as a harsh king condemning.
And when absent and when present alike they were being worn away.
For a double grief and groaning of the memorials that had passed seized them.
For when they heard, through their own punishments, that they were benefited, they perceived the Lord’s hand in it.
γὰρ ἐν ἐκθέσει πάλαι ῥιφέντα ἀπεῖπον χλευάζοντες ἐπὶ τέλει τῶν ἐκβάσεων ἐθαύμασαν οὐχ ὅμοια δικαίοις διψήσαντες
For him, indeed, whom they had long ago cast out at exposure, they said with mocking; at the end of the outcomes they marveled, not thirsting for things like the righteous.
δὲ λογισμῶν ἀσυνέτων ἀδικίας αὐτῶν ἐν οἷς πλανηθέντες ἐθρήσκευον ἄλογα ἑρπετὰ καὶ κνώδαλα εὐτελῆ ἐπαπέστειλας αὐτοῖς πλῆθος ἀλόγων ζῴων εἰς ἐκδίκησιν
And instead of the unwise devices of their unrighteousness, by which, having gone astray, they worshiped irrational creeping things and worthless beasts, you sent upon them a multitude of irrational animals for retribution
so that they might know that by the things through which one sins, by these he is punished
γὰρ ἠπόρει ἡ παντοδύναμός σου χεὶρ καὶ κτίσασα τὸν κόσμον ἐξ ἀμόρφου ὕλης ἐπιπέμψαι αὐτοῖς πλῆθος ἄρκων ἢ θρασεῖς λέοντας
For your all-powerful hand, which created the world out of formless matter, did not hesitate to send upon them a multitude of bears or bold lions
νεοκτίστους θυμοῦ πλήρεις θῆρας ἀγνώστους ἤτοι πυρπνόον φυσῶντας ἄσθμα ἢ βρόμον λικμωμένους καπνοῦ ἢ δεινοὺς ἀπ᾿ ὀμμάτων σπινθῆρας ἀστράπτοντας
or creatures newly created, full of wrath, unknown, or breathing fire-bearing breath, or scattering smoke in a whirling, or terrible with sparkling sparks from their eyes
of which not only the harm was able to crush them together, but also the sight, having frightened them, to destroy them
χωρὶς δὲ τούτων ἑνὶ πνεύματι πεσεῖν ἐδύναντο ὑπὸ τῆς δίκης διωχθέντες καὶ λικμηθέντες ὑπὸ πνεύματος δυνάμεώς σου ἀλλὰ πάντα μέτρῳ καὶ ἀριθμῷ καὶ σταθμῷ διέταξας
And apart from these, they were able to fall by one breath, pursued by the punishment and winnowed by the breath of your power; but you ordered all things by measure and number and weight.
For to be greatly powerful is always with you, and who will resist the might of your arm?
For as a tipping of a balance, the whole world is before you, and as a morning drop of dew coming down upon the earth.
But you are merciful to all, because you are able to do all things, and you overlook the sins of men for repentance
For you love all things that are and detest nothing of what you made; for neither would you have fashioned anything if you were hating it.
But how could anything have remained, unless you had willed it, or what was not called by you was preserved?
But you spare all things, because they are yours, O Master, lover of life.
