1 Peter 4 — SBL Greek New Testament

Χριστοῦ οὖν παθόντος σαρκὶ καὶ ὑμεῖς τὴν αὐτὴν ἔννοιαν ὁπλίσασθε, ὅτι ὁ παθὼν σαρκὶ πέπαυται ἁμαρτίας,

Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same intention, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,

εἰς τὸ μηκέτι ἀνθρώπων ἐπιθυμίαις ἀλλὰ θελήματι θεοῦ τὸν ἐπίλοιπον ἐν σαρκὶ βιῶσαι χρόνον.

to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires but for the will of God.

For the time past is sufficient to have carried out the will of the nations, living in sensuality, desires, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and unlawful idolatries.

ἐν ᾧ ξενίζονται μὴ συντρεχόντων ὑμῶν εἰς τὴν αὐτὴν τῆς ἀσωτίας ἀνάχυσιν, βλασφημοῦντες·

In which they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same flood of debauchery, blaspheming.

οἳ ἀποδώσουσιν λόγον τῷ ἑτοίμως ἔχοντι κρῖναι ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς·

who will give an account to the one ready to judge the living and the dead;

εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ καὶ νεκροῖς εὐηγγελίσθη ἵνα κριθῶσι μὲν κατὰ ἀνθρώπους σαρκὶ ζῶσι δὲ κατὰ θεὸν πνεύματι.

For this reason the gospel was preached even to the dead, so that they might be judged according to human flesh, but live according to God in spirit.

Πάντων δὲ τὸ τέλος ἤγγικεν. σωφρονήσατε οὖν καὶ νήψατε εἰς προσευχάς·

The end of all things has come. Therefore, be sober-minded and watchful in your prayers.

πρὸ πάντων τὴν εἰς ἑαυτοὺς ἀγάπην ἐκτενῆ ἔχοντες, ὅτι ἀγάπη καλύπτει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν·

Above all, have intense love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.

φιλόξενοι εἰς ἀλλήλους ἄνευ γογγυσμοῦ·

Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.

ἕκαστος καθὼς ἔλαβεν χάρισμα, εἰς ἑαυτοὺς αὐτὸ διακονοῦντες ὡς καλοὶ οἰκονόμοι ποικίλης χάριτος θεοῦ·

Each one as he has received a gift, serving it to others as good stewards of the varied grace of God.

If anyone speaks, as words of God; if anyone serves, as by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the power to the ages of the ages. Amen.

Ἀγαπητοί, μὴ ξενίζεσθε τῇ ἐν ὑμῖν πυρώσει πρὸς πειρασμὸν ὑμῖν γινομένῃ ὡς ξένου ὑμῖν συμβαίνοντος,

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial among you that is happening as if something strange were happening to you,

ἀλλὰ καθὸ κοινωνεῖτε τοῖς τοῦ Χριστοῦ παθήμασιν χαίρετε, ἵνα καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀποκαλύψει τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ χαρῆτε ἀγαλλιώμενοι.

But since you share in the sufferings of the Messiah, rejoice so that you may also rejoice with exultation at the revelation of his glory.

εἰ ὀνειδίζεσθε ἐν ὀνόματι Χριστοῦ, μακάριοι, ὅτι τὸ τῆς δόξης καὶ τὸ τοῦ θεοῦ πνεῦμα ἐφ' ὑμᾶς ἀναπαύεται.

If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

μὴ γάρ τις ὑμῶν πασχέτω ὡς φονεὺς ἢ κλέπτης ἢ κακοποιὸς ἢ ὡς ἀλλοτριεπίσκοπος·

For let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or evildoer or as a meddler.

16

εἰ δὲ ὡς Χριστιανός, μὴ αἰσχυνέσθω, δοξαζέτω δὲ τὸν θεὸν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ.

But if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this name.

17

For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

18

καὶ εἰ ὁ δίκαιος μόλις σῴζεται, ὁ ἀσεβὴς καὶ ἁμαρτωλὸς ποῦ φανεῖται;

And if the righteous is scarcely saved, where will the ungodly and sinner appear?

19

ὥστε καὶ οἱ πάσχοντες κατὰ τὸ θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ πιστῷ κτίστῃ παρατιθέσθωσαν τὰς ψυχὰς αὐτῶν ἐν ἀγαθοποιΐᾳ.

So then, those who suffer according to the will of God should entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.
