And after we were saved, then we recognized that the island is called Melite.

The barbarians showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed all of us because of the rain that was falling and because of the cold.

And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand.

But when the barbarians saw the beast hanging from his hand, they said to one another, This man is certainly a murderer, whom, though he was saved from the sea, justice does not allow to live.

Then he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm.

But they were expecting him to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. After they had waited a long time and saw that nothing unusual was happening to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

Now in the vicinity of that place there was a village belonging to the chief of the island named Publius, who welcomed us and hosted us hospitably for three days.

Now the father of Publius was lying sick with fever and dysentery, and Paul entered to him, and after praying, laying his hands on him, he healed him.

And when this had happened, the rest of those on the island who had diseases also came and were healed,

They honored us with many honors and, when we were about to set out, they provided what was necessary.

After three months we set sail on a ship that had wintered in the island of Alexandria, with the Dioscuri as its figurehead.

And having disembarked at Syracuse, we stayed for three days,

From there, having taken a roundabout route, we reached Rhegium. And after one day, when a south wind arose, on the second day we came to Puteoli,

Where we found brothers, we were invited by them to stay for seven days, and so we came to Rome.

And from there the brothers, having heard about us, came to meet us as far as Appius Forum and the Three Taverns, whom Paul, having seen, gave thanks to God and took courage.

When we entered Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier guarding him.

After three days, he arranged to meet with the leading Jews. When they had gathered, he said to them, Men brothers, I have done nothing against the people or against the customs of the ancestors, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,

who, having examined me, wanted to release me because there was no cause of death in me;

But when the Jews were opposing, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not as having anything to accuse my nation of.

For this reason, then, I have asked to see you and to speak with you, because for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

But they said to him, We have neither received letters about you from Judea, nor has any of the brothers who have come reported or spoken anything evil about you.

But we desire to hear from you what you think, for concerning this sect it is known to us that it is opposed everywhere.

When they had arranged a day, more came to him at the lodging, to whom he explained and testified about the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus from both the law of Moses and the prophets, from morning until evening.

And some were persuaded by the things spoken, but others did not believe,

But being in disagreement with one another, they separated after Paul said one word: that the Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers.

saying, Go to this people and say, You will hear and not understand, and seeing you will see and not perceive;

For the heart of this people has grown dull, and with their ears they have heard heavily, and they have closed their eyes; lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn back, and I should heal them.

Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will also listen.

He stayed two whole years in his own rented place and welcomed all who came to him,

Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness without hindrance.
