Now when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John—

And Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were—

He left Judea and went back again into Galilee.

But he had to pass through Samaria.

So he comes to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to Joseph his son.

Now there was Jacob’s well. So Jesus, tired from the journey, was sitting there by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

A woman from Samaria comes to draw water. Jesus says to her, Give me a drink.

For his disciples had gone into the city to buy food.

The Samaritan woman therefore says to him, How is it that you, being a Jew, ask me for a drink, a woman who is a Samaritan? For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.

Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God and who it is who says to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.

The woman said to him, Lord, you have no bucket, and the well is deep; where then do you have the living water?

Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, and his sons and his livestock also?

Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone who drinks from this water will thirst again.

But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never thirst into the age, but the water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up into eternal life.

The woman says to him, Lord, give me this water so that I may not be thirsty nor come here to draw.

He said to her, Go, call your husband and come here.

The woman answered him and said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have said well that I have no husband.

For you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.

The woman said to him, Lord, I see that you are a prophet.

Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, and you say that the place where one must worship is in Jerusalem.

Jesus said to her, Believe me, woman, that a time is coming when you will neither worship the Father on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.

But the hour is coming and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such ones to worship him.

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

The woman says to him, I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called Christ; when he comes, he will declare everything to us.

Jesus said to her, I am the one speaking to you.

And at that moment his disciples came, and they were amazed that he was speaking with a woman; yet no one said, What are you seeking? or Why are you speaking with her?

So the woman left her water jar and went into the city and said to the people,

Come, see a man who told me all the things I have done. Could this be the Messiah?

They went out of the city and were coming to him.

Meanwhile the disciples were asking him, Rabbi, eat.

But he said to them, I have food to eat that you do not know about.

Therefore the disciples said to one another, Has anyone brought him something to eat?

Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work.

Do you not say, It is yet four months, and the harvest is coming? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and see the fields, that they are white for harvest already.

The one who reaps receives a wage and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one who sows may rejoice together with the one who reaps.

For in this the word is true, that one is the sower and another is the reaper.

I have sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have worked, and you have entered into their labor.

Now many of the Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the word of the woman who testified, He told me everything I have done.

So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days.

And many more believed because of his word,

They said to the woman, We no longer believe because of your speech; for we ourselves have heard, and we know that this one is truly the Savior of the world.

After two days he went out from there into Galilee.

For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

So when he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things he did in Jerusalem at the festival, for they also had gone to the festival.

So he came again to Cana of Galilee, where he had made the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick in Capernaum.

When this man heard that Jesus was coming from Judea into Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.

Jesus therefore said to him, Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.

The royal official said to him, Lord, come down before my child dies.

Jesus said to him, Go; your son lives. The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went.

Now as he was going down, his servants met him and said that his boy was living.

He then inquired from them the hour at which he got better. They said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.

Then the father knew that at that hour in which Jesus had said to him, Your son lives, and he himself believed, and his whole household.

This was again the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea into Galilee.
