After these things there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now in Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gate, there is a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes.

In these lay a multitude of the sick, blind, lame, and withered.

There was a certain man there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.

Jesus, seeing him lying there and knowing that he had already been a long time, said to him, Do you want to become healthy?

The sick man answered him, Lord, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred; and while I am coming, another goes down before me.

Jesus said to him, Get up, take up your bed, and walk.

And immediately the man became healthy and took up his bed and walked. Now it was the Sabbath on that day.

Therefore the Jews said to the one who had been healed, It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.

But the one who answered them said, The one who made me well said to me, Take up your bed and walk.

They therefore asked him, Who is the man who said to you, Take up and walk?

But the one healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn because there was a crowd in the place.

After these things Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, Behold, you have become healthy; do not sin anymore, so that something worse may not happen to you.

The man went away and reported to the Jews that Jesus is the one who made him well.

And for this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

But he answered them, My Father is working until now, and I am working.

For this reason the Jews were seeking even more to kill him, because he not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.

Jesus answered and said to them, Truly, truly I say to you, the Son cannot do anything from himself unless he sees the Father doing it; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way.

For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself does, and he will show him greater works than these, so that you may marvel.

For just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also the Son gives life to whom he wishes.

For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,

so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

Truly, truly I say to you, the one who hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment but has passed from death into life.

Truly, truly I say to you, the hour is coming and now is when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to the Son to have life in himself.

And he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice.

And those who have done the good will come out to a resurrection of life, but those who have done the evil to a resurrection of judgment.

I am not able to do anything from myself; as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.

If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.

There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony he gives about me is true.

You sent to John, and he testified to the truth.

But I do not receive testimony from a human, but I say these things so that you may be saved.

He was the lamp burning and shining, but you wanted to rejoice for a time in his light.

But I have a testimony greater than John’s, for the works that the Father gave me to complete—the very works that I do—testify about me that the Father has sent me.

And the Father who sent me has testified about me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,

And you do not have his word remaining in you, because the one whom he sent, you do not believe in him.

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that testify about me.

And you do not want to come to me so that you may have life.

I do not receive glory from people,

But I have come to know that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.

I have come in the name of my Father, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.

How can you believe, receiving glory from one another and not seeking the glory that comes from the only God?

Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have hoped.

For if you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.

But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?
