After these things Jesus went across the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.

A large crowd was following him because they were watching the signs he was performing on the sick.

Jesus went up to the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.

Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near.

Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and, seeing that a large crowd was coming to him, said to Philip, Where shall we buy bread so that these may eat?

He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was about to do.

Philip answered him, Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not enough for them to each receive a little.

One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,

There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are these for so many?

Jesus said, Make the people sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, the number about five thousand.

Jesus then took the loaves, and after giving thanks, distributed them to those reclining, likewise also as much of the fish as they wanted.

When they were filled, he said to his disciples, Gather the leftover fragments so that nothing is lost.

So they gathered up and filled twelve baskets with the fragments from the five barley loaves that were left over by those who had eaten.

Therefore the people, seeing the sign that he had done, said, This is truly the prophet who is coming into the world.

Jesus, therefore, knowing that they were about to come and seize him to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain alone.

When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,

And having entered into the boat, they were going across the sea to Capernaum. And darkness had already come, and Jesus had not yet come to them,

And the sea was stirred up by a great wind blowing.

So when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were afraid.

But he said to them, I am; do not be afraid.

They wanted therefore to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

The next day the crowd standing across the sea saw that there was no other boat there except one, and that Jesus had not entered with his disciples into the boat, but only his disciples had gone away.

But boats came from Tiberias near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they got into the boats and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus.

And finding him across the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you come here?

Jesus answered them and said, Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek me not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.

Work not for the food that perishes but for the food that remains for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for God the Father has sealed him.

They said therefore to him, What must we do to work the works of God?

Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that you believe in the one whom he has sent.

They said therefore to him, What then do you do as a sign, so that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform?

Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

Jesus therefore said to them, Truly, truly I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

For the bread of God is the one descending from heaven and giving life to the world.

They said to him, Lord, always give us this bread.

Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; the one coming to me will never hunger, and the one believing in me will never thirst at any time.

But I have told you that you have seen me and yet you do not believe.

All that the Father gives to me will come to me, and the one coming to me I will never cast out.

For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.

And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of all that he has given me, but that I should raise it up on the last day.

For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

Therefore the Jews grumbled about him because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven,

And they were saying, Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, I have come down from heaven?

Jesus answered and said to them, Do not grumble among yourselves.

No one is able to come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day.

It is written in the prophets: They will all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard from the Father and learned comes to me.

Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.

Truly, truly I say to you, the one believing has eternal life.

I am the bread of life.

Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died.

This is the bread that has come down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread, they will live forever. And the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.

The Jews then argued among themselves, saying, How can this one give us his flesh to eat?

Jesus therefore said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves.

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I remain in him.

Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.

This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread will live forever.

He said these things while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Therefore many of his disciples, having heard, said, This word is hard; who is able to listen to it?

But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, Does this cause you to stumble?

If then you see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?

The Spirit is the one who gives life; the flesh is of no benefit at all. The words that I have spoken to you are Spirit and life.

But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who were the ones not believing and who it was that would deliver him up.

And he was saying, For this reason I have said to you that no one can come to me unless it has been granted to him by the Father.

From this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.

Then Jesus said to the twelve, Do you also want to go away?

Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life,

And we have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.

Jesus answered them, Did I not choose you twelve? Yet one of you is a devil.

But he was speaking about Judas Simon Iscariot, for he was about to betray him, one of the twelve.
