Now there was a certain man sick, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and Martha, her sister.

Now Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.

Therefore the sisters sent to him saying, Lord, see the one whom you love is sick.

When Jesus heard it, he said, This illness is not for death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

So when he heard that he was sick, he remained where he was for two days.

Then after this, he says to the disciples, Let us go again into Judea.

The disciples said to him, Rabbi, just now the Jews were seeking to stone you, and you are going there again?

Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles because the light is not in him.

He said these things, and after this he says to them, Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awaken him.

Therefore the disciples said to him, Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be saved.

Jesus had spoken about his death. But they thought that he was speaking about falling asleep.

Then Jesus said to them plainly, Lazarus has died,

And I am glad for your sake, so that you may believe, because I was not there; but let us go to him.

Then Thomas, called Didymus, said to the fellow disciples, Let us also go so that we may die with him.

So Jesus came and found him having already been in the tomb four days.

Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.

Now many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother.

Now Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went out to meet him; but Mary was sitting in the house.

Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

And now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.

Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise.

Martha said to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.

Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. The one believing in me, even if he dies, will live,

And everyone who lives and believes in me will never die into the age; do you believe this?

She says to him, Yes, Lord; I have believed that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.

And having said this, she went away and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is here and is calling for you.

But when she heard it, she got up quickly and came to him.

But Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.

Therefore the Jews who were with her in the house comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

Now when Mary came where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

Therefore Jesus, when he saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit and troubled himself,

And he said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see.

Jesus wept.

Therefore the Jews were saying, See how he loved him.

Some of them said, This one who opened the eyes of the blind man could he not also have made it so that this man would not die?

Jesus, therefore, again deeply moved within himself, came to the tomb; and there was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.

Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the one who died, said to him, Lord, it already smells, for he has been dead four days.

Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?

So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, Father, I thank you that you have heard me,

But I knew that you always hear me; yet because of the crowd standing around I said it, so that they may believe that you sent me.

And having said these things with a loud voice, he cried out, Lazarus, come out.

The one who had died came out bound hand and foot with linen strips, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Untie him and let him go.

Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done believed in him.

Some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, What shall we do, because this man performs many signs?

If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.

But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You do not know anything,

Do you not consider that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation should not perish?

This he did not say on his own, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation,

and not only for the nation, but also so that the children of God who are scattered may be gathered into one.

From that day therefore they planned to kill him.

So Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.

Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the countryside before the Passover to purify themselves.

Therefore they were seeking Jesus and were saying to one another while standing in the temple, What do you think? That he will not come to the festival?

The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, they should report it so that they might arrest him.
