Having said these things, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron brook, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.

Now Judas the one betraying him also knew the place, because Jesus often gathered there with his disciples.

Then Judas, having taken the detachment and servants from the chief priests and Pharisees, comes there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

Jesus, therefore, knowing all the things coming upon him, went out and said to them, Who do you seek?

They answered him, Jesus the Nazarene. He said to them, I am. Judas, the one betraying him, was also standing with them.

When he said to them, I am, they drew back and fell to the ground.

Again he asked them, Who are you seeking? They said, Jesus the Nazarene.

Jesus answered, I told you that I am. So if you seek me, let these go away.

so that the word he spoke might be fulfilled, that none of those whom you gave me would be lost.

Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

Then Jesus said to Peter, Put the sword into the sheath; the cup that the Father has given me, shall I not drink it?

Then the detachment and the captain and the servants of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him.

And they led him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

Now Caiaphas was the one who advised the Jews that it is advantageous for one man to die on behalf of the people.

Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. That disciple was known to the high priest and entered with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,

But Peter was standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.

Then the servant girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, Are you not also one of the disciples of this man? He said, I am not.

Now the servants and the attendants were standing, having made a fire of charcoal because it was cold, and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also standing with them, warming himself.

The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.

Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and I have said nothing in secret.

Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said to them; see, they know what I said.

When he said this, one of the servants standing nearby struck Jesus, saying, Is this how you answer the high priest?

Jesus answered him, If I have spoken wrongly, testify concerning the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike me?

Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, Are you not also one of his disciples? He denied it and said, I am not.

One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, said, Did I not see you in the garden with him?

Then Peter denied again; and immediately a rooster crowed.

Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was early morning, and they themselves did not enter the praetorium so that they would not be defiled but could eat the Passover.

Then Pilate went outside to them and said, What charge do you bring against this man?

They answered and said to him, If this one were not doing evil, we would not have handed him over to you.

Then Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law. The Jews said to him, It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.

so that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spoke, indicating by what kind of death he was about to die.

Then Pilate entered again into the praetorium and called Jesus, and said to him, Are you the king of the Jews?

Jesus answered, Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you about me?

Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?

Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here.

Pilate therefore said to him, Are you a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.

Pilate said to him, What is truth? And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, I find no charge in him.

Now it is your custom that I release one to you at the Passover. Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?

They shouted again, saying, Not this one, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
