Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.

And the soldiers, having woven a crown of thorns, placed it on his head, and put a purple robe around him,

And they came to him and said, Hail, King of the Jews; and they gave him blows.

And Pilate went out again outside and said to them, Behold, I bring him out to you, so that you may know that I find no cause in him.

Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And he said to them, Behold the man.

When therefore the chief priests and the servants saw him, they shouted, saying, Crucify, crucify. Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no cause in him.

The Jews answered him, We have a law, and according to the law he must die, because he made himself the Son of God.

Therefore when Pilate heard this word, he became more afraid,

And he entered again into the praetorium and said to Jesus, Where are you from? But Jesus did not give him an answer.

Then Pilate said to him, Do you not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and I have authority to crucify you?

Jesus answered him, You would have no authority over me at all if it had not been given to you from above; therefore the one who handed me over to you has greater sin.

From this, Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews shouted, saying, If you release this one, you are not a friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself king opposes Caesar.

Then Pilate, hearing these words, brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, which in Hebrew is called Gabbatha.

Now it was the preparation of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, Behold your king.

Therefore they shouted, Away, away, crucify him. Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king except Caesar.

Then therefore he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus.

And carrying the cross for himself, he went out to the place called the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha,

Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on this side and one on that side, with Jesus in the middle.

Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross. It was written: Jesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews.

Therefore many of the Jews read this title, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not write, The King of the Jews, but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.

Therefore the soldiers, when they crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, one part for each soldier, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was seamless, woven from the top throughout.

Therefore they said to one another, Let us not tear him, but let us cast lots for whose it will be. So that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says, They divided my clothes among themselves and cast lots for my garment. Then the soldiers did these things.

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and the sister of his mother, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

Jesus, therefore, seeing his mother and the disciple standing near whom he loved, says to his mother, Woman, behold your son.

Then he says to the disciple, Behold, your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been completed, so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst.

There was a vessel full of vinegar. So, having put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, they brought it to his mouth.

When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, It is finished, and bowing his head, he gave up the spirit.

Therefore the Jews, because it was the preparation and the day of that Sabbath was great, asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and they might be taken away.

Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with him.

But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs,

But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

And the one who saw has testified, and his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.

For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of his bones will be broken.

And again another Scripture says: They will look on the one whom they have pierced.

After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus but hidden because of the fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took away his body.

Now also came Nicodemus, the one who had first come to him by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloe, about a hundred pounds.

So they took the body of Jesus and bound it with linen cloths along with the spices, as is the custom of the Jews to bury.

Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid.

Therefore, because it was the preparation of the Jews, and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
