Now it happened on a Sabbath that he was passing through grainfields, and his disciples were plucking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands.

Some of the Pharisees said, What are you doing that is not lawful on the Sabbaths?

And Jesus answered them, He said, Did you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those with him?

As he entered the house of God and took the bread of the offering, he ate and gave to those with him, whom it is not lawful to eat except for the priests alone.

And he said to them, The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.

Now it happened on another Sabbath that he entered the synagogue to teach, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.

But the scribes and the Pharisees were watching to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a charge against him.

But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man who had the withered hand, Stand up and come into the middle; and standing up, he stood there.

But Jesus said to them, I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it?

And looking around at all of them, he said to him, Stretch out your hand. And he did so, and his hand was restored.

But they were filled with madness, and they discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Now it happened in those days that he went out to the mountain to pray, and he was spending the night in prayer to God.

And when day came, he called his disciples and, having chosen twelve from them, whom he also named apostles,

Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew

and Matthew and Thomas and James son of Alphaeus and Simon who is called the Zealot

and Judas of James and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

And coming down with them, he stood on a level place, and a large crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon,

who came to hear him and to be healed from their diseases; and those troubled by unclean spirits were being cured;

And all the crowd was seeking to touch him, because power was going out from him and healing all.

And he, lifting up his eyes to his disciples, said: Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

Blessed are those who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are those who weep now, for you will laugh.

Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the Son of Man.

Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for in the same way their fathers treated the prophets.

But woe to you who are rich, because you have received your consolation.

Woe to you who are full now, because you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, because you will mourn and weep.

Woe when all people speak well of you, for their fathers did the same to the false prophets.

But I say to you who are listening, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

To the one who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other, and from the one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic.

Give to everyone who asks you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.

And just as you want people to do to you, do the same to them.

And if you love those who love you, what grace is there for you? For even sinners love those who love them.

And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.

And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners to receive back the same amount.

But love your enemies and do good and lend without expecting anything in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and evil.

Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

And do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Release, and you will be released.

Give, and it will be given to you; a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and overflowing, they will put into your lap. For with the measure you measure, it will be measured back to you.

And he also spoke a parable to them: Can a blind person lead a blind person? Will they not both fall into a pit?

A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.

Why do you see the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?

How can you say to your brother, Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye, when you do not see the beam in your own eye? Hypocrite, first take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

For no good tree produces bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree produce good fruit.

For each tree is known by its own fruit; for no one gathers figs from thorns, nor does anyone pick grapes from a bramble.

The good person from the good treasure of his heart produces what is good, and the evil person from the evil produces what is evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?

Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you to whom he is like.

He is like a man building a house who dug and deepened and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood came, the river struck that house, and it was not able to shake it because it was well built.

But the one who hears and does not do is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation, against which the river rushed, and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.
