Calling together the twelve, he gave them power and authority over all demons and to heal diseases,

And he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick,

And he said to them, Do not take anything for the journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor silver, nor two tunics.

And into whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.

And whoever does not receive you, as you leave that city, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.

And going out, they went through the villages, preaching and healing everywhere.

Now Herod the tetrarch heard all that was happening, and he was perplexed because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead,

But some said that Elijah had appeared, and others said that a certain prophet from the ancient ones had risen.

Herod said, I beheaded John; but who is this about whom I hear such things? And he sought to see him.

And the apostles, having returned, reported to him all that they had done. And taking them, he withdrew privately to a city called Bethsaida.

But when the crowds recognized it, they followed him. And welcoming them, he spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing.

But the day began to decline; and the twelve approached him and said, Send the crowd away so that, having gone into the surrounding villages and countryside, they may lodge and find food, because we are here in a deserted place.

But he said to them, Give them something to eat yourselves. They said, We do not have more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.

For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Arrange them in groups of about fifty on couches.

And they did so and laid all of them down.

Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, blessed them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.

And they all ate and were satisfied, and the twelve baskets of fragments that remained were taken up by them.

And it happened, while he was praying alone, that the disciples were with him, and he asked them, saying, Who do the crowds say that I am?

But those answering said, John the Baptist; others, Elijah; others, that a certain prophet of the ancients has risen.

He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Peter, answering, said, The Christ of God.

But he rebuked them and ordered them not to tell this to anyone,

Saying that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised.

And he said to all, If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

For whoever wants to save his soul will lose it, but whoever loses his soul for my sake will save it.

For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world but lose himself or be harmed?

For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that one when he comes in his glory and of the Father and of the holy angels.

But I tell you truly, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.

After these words, about eight days later, he took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray.

And it happened, as he was praying, that the appearance of his face became different, and his clothing became white, shining.

And behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah,

who, having appeared in glory, were speaking about his departure, which he was about to fulfill in Jerusalem.

But Peter and those with him were weighed down by sleep; and when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

And as they were separating from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here, and let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah, not knowing what he was saying.

While he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.

And a voice came from the cloud saying, This is my Son, the chosen one; listen to him.

And when the voice came, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and reported to no one in those days anything they had seen.

Now on the next day, as they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.

And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only son,

And behold, a spirit seizes him, and suddenly he cries out, and convulses him with foam, and scarcely departs from him, crushing him.

And I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they were not able.

And Jesus answered and said, O unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here.

While he was still coming, the demon threw the boy down and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

And all were amazed at the greatness of God. While all were marveling at everything he was doing, he said to his disciples,

Pay attention to these words, for the Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.

But they did not understand this saying, and it was hidden from them so that they would not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about the saying.

But a dispute arose among them about which one of them would be greatest.

But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and stood him beside himself,

And he said to them, Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me; for the one who is least among all of you, this one is great.

But John answered, Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he does not follow with us.

But Jesus said to him, Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.

Now it happened, as the days of his ascension were being fulfilled, that he set his face to go to Jerusalem,

And he sent messengers ahead of him. And having gone, they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for him.

And they did not receive him because his face was set toward going to Jerusalem.

But when James and John saw this, they said, Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?

But he turned and rebuked them.

And they went on to another village.

And as they were going on the way, someone said to him, I will follow you wherever you go.

And Jesus said to him, Foxes have dens and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.

He said to another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.

But he said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.

And another said, I will follow you, Lord; but first allow me to say farewell to those in my house.

But Jesus said, No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.
