And it happened that while he was praying in a certain place, when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.

He said to them, When you pray, say: Father, may your name be sanctified; may your kingdom come;

Give us each day our necessary bread.

And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us; and do not bring us into temptation.

And he said to them, Who among you will have a friend and go to him at midnight and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves,

Since a friend of mine has come from the road to me, and I have nothing to set before him,

And he from inside answers and says, Do not trouble me; the door is already shut, and my children are with me in bed; I am not able, having risen, to give to you.

I tell you, even if he will not get up and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.

And I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

Which one of you, if a son asks his father for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish?

Or if he asks for an egg, will he give him a scorpion?

If then you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father from heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.

And he was casting out a demon from a mute man; and when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds were amazed.

But some of them said, He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.

Others, testing, were seeking a sign from heaven from him.

But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a house falls upon a house.

But if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.

But if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.

But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own courtyard, his possessions are safe.

But when someone stronger than him comes and overcomes him, he takes away the armor in which he trusted and distributes his plunder.

Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

When the unclean spirit goes out from a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding it, it says, I will return to my house from which I came out.

And coming, he finds it swept and put in order.

Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and entering, dwells there, and the last state of that person becomes worse than the first.

As he was saying these things, a woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to him, Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.

But he said, Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.

As the crowds gathered, he began to say, This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation.

The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, greater than Solomon is here.

The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and will condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, more than Jonah is here.

No one, having lit a lamp, puts it in a hidden place or under a measuring basket, but on the lampstand, so that those entering may see the light.

The lamp of the body is your eye. When your eye is simple, then your whole body is full of light; but when it is evil, then your body is full of darkness.

Therefore, be careful that the light in you is not darkness.

If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be entirely full of light, as when the lamp shines with its brightness on you.

And while he was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to eat with him; and he entered and reclined.

But the Pharisee, seeing it, was amazed that he did not first wash before the meal.

But the Lord said to him, Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.

Fools, did not the one who made the outside also make the inside?

But give as alms the things that are within, and behold, all things are clean for you.

But woe to you Pharisees, because you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and you pass over justice and the love of God; these things you ought to have done, and not to leave the others undone.

Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the place of honor in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces.

Woe to you, because you are like unmarked tombs, and the people walking on them do not know it.

And one of the lawyers answered him, Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.

But he said, Woe to you also, lawyers, because you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

Woe to you, because you build the tombs of the prophets, but your fathers killed them.

Then you are witnesses and you approve the works of your fathers, for they killed them, but you build.

Therefore the wisdom of God also said, I will send to them prophets and apostles, and from among them they will kill and persecute,

so that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, might be sought from this generation,

From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house; yes, I tell you, it will be demanded from this generation.

Woe to you, the lawyers, because you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.

And as he went out from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to silence him about many things,

They were lying in wait for him to catch something from his mouth.
