And it happened on one of the days, while he was teaching the people in the temple and proclaiming the good news, that the chief priests and the scribes with the elders stood up,

And they said to him, Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who is the one who gave you this authority?

And answering, he said to them, I will ask you a word, and you tell me.

Was the baptism of John from heaven or from people?

But they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven, he will say, Why then did you not believe him?

But if we say, From men, the whole crowd will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.

And they answered that they did not know from where.

And Jesus said to them, I also will not tell you by what authority I do these things.

He began to tell the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and leased it to tenants, and went away for a long time.

And at a certain time he sent a servant to the farmers, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard; but the farmers sent him away beaten and empty-handed.

And he sent another servant; and they beat him and treated him shamefully and sent him away empty-handed.

And he sent a third, and they also wounded this one and threw him out.

And the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.

But when the tenants saw him, they discussed among themselves, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance may be ours.

And having thrown him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others. But when they heard it, they said, May it never be.

But he looked at them and said, What then is this that is written: The stone that the builders rejected, this one became the head of the corner?

Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him.

And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him at that hour, but they feared the people, for they understood that he had spoken this parable against them.

And having observed, they sent spies pretending to be righteous themselves, in order to catch him in speech, so that they might deliver him to the authority and the power of the governor.

And they questioned him, saying, Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly and do not show partiality, but teach the way of God in truth.

Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar or not?

But perceiving their craftiness, he said to them,

Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have? They answered, Caesar’s.

He said to them, Therefore give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.

And they were not able to seize the word before the people, and marveling at his answer, they became silent.

Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and questioned him.

saying, Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, the brother should take the wife and raise up offspring for his brother.

There were seven brothers; and the first, having taken a wife, died childless.

and the second

And the third took her, and in the same way the seven also did not leave children and died.

Later the woman also died.

The woman therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.

And Jesus said to them, The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,

But those who are considered worthy of that age and of the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.

For they are no longer able to die, because they are like angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

Now that the dead are raised, Moses showed at the bush that he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

But God is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to Him.

And some of the scribes answered and said, Teacher, you have spoken well.

For no longer did anyone dare to question him.

And he said to them, How do they say that the Christ is the son of David?

For David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand

until I place your enemies as a footstool under your feet.

David therefore calls him Lord, and how is he his son?

While all the people were listening, he said to his disciples,

Beware of the scribes who want to walk around in robes and love greetings in the marketplaces and the first seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at dinners,

They devour the houses of widows and, under the pretense of long prayers, will receive greater condemnation.
