And again he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered to him, so that he got into a boat and sat down in the sea, and all the crowd was on the shore by the sea.

And he taught them many things in parables and said to them in his teaching.

Listen. Behold, the sower went out to sow.

And it happened, as he was sowing, that some seed fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate it up.

And another fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil.

And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and because it had no root, it withered away.

And another fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it did not produce fruit.

And others fell on the good soil and were producing fruit, growing up, and were yielding one thirty, and one sixty, and one a hundred.

And he said, Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.

And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables.

And he said to them, To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God; but for those outside, everything is done in parables,

so that, seeing, they may see and not perceive, and hearing, they may hear and not understand, so that they may not turn back and be forgiven.

And he says to them, Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?

The one sowing the word is sowing.

But these are the ones beside the road where the word is sown, and when they hear immediately Satan comes and takes away the word sown in them.

And these are the ones sown on the rocky places, who when they hear the word immediately receive it with joy,

and they do not have root in themselves but are temporary; then when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they stumble.

And others are those sown among the thorns; these are the ones who have heard the word,

And the worries of the age and the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

And those are the ones sown on the good earth, who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, one thirtyfold, and one sixtyfold, and one a hundredfold.

And he said to them, Is the lamp brought to be put under the bushel or under the bed, and not to be put on the lampstand?

For there is nothing hidden except to be revealed, nor was anything secret except to come to light.

If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.

And he said to them, Pay attention to what you hear. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and more will be added to you.

For whoever has, it will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

And he said, The kingdom of God is like a man who sows seed on the ground.

And he sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.

The earth produces fruit by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then full grain in the ear.

But when the fruit is delivered, immediately he sends out the sickle, because the harvest has come.

And he said, How shall we compare the kingdom of God, or in what parable shall we put it?

like a mustard seed, which when sown on the ground is smaller than all the seeds on the ground—

And when it is sown, it rises and becomes greater than all the vegetables and produces large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell under its shade.

And with many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear.

But without a parable he did not speak to them; privately, however, to his own disciples he explained everything.

And on that day, when evening had come, he said to them, Let us go across to the other side.

And leaving the crowd, they took him with them just as he was in the boat, and other boats were with him.

And a great storm of wind arose, and the waves were beating into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.

And he was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion; and they wake him and say to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?

And having risen, he rebuked the wind and said to the sea, Be silent, be muzzled. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

And he said to them, Why are you afraid? Do you still not have faith?

And they were greatly afraid, and they said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
