And immediately in the morning, having held a council, the chief priests with the elders and the scribes, and the whole council, bound Jesus and led him away and handed him over to Pilate.

And Pilate asked him, Are you the king of the Jews? And he answered him, You say so.

And the chief priests accused him of many things.

But Pilate again questioned him, saying, Are you not going to answer anything? See how many charges they bring against you.

But Jesus no longer answered anything, so that Pilate was amazed.

Now during the festival he would release to them one prisoner whom they requested.

Now there was a man called Barabbas, bound with the rebels who had committed murder in the rebellion.

And the crowd, having risen up, began to ask as he was doing to them.

But Pilate answered them, saying, Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?

For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.

But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead.

But Pilate answered them again, What then do you want me to do with the one you call the king of the Jews?

But they shouted again, Crucify him.

But Pilate said to them, What evil has he done? And they shouted all the more, Crucify him.

But Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released to them Barabbas, and handed over Jesus after flogging him, in order that he might be crucified.

The soldiers led him inside the courtyard, which is the praetorium, and they called together the whole cohort.

And they clothe him in purple and place on him a woven crown of thorns.

And they began to greet him, Hail, King of the Jews.

And they struck his head with a reed and spat on him, and kneeling, they bowed down to him.

And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

And they compel someone passing by, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, coming from the countryside, to carry his cross.

And they bring him to Golgotha, the place, which is translated Skull Place.

And they gave him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.

And they crucified him and divided his clothes, casting lots for them to see what each would take.

It was the third hour, and they crucified him.

And the inscription of the charge against him was written: The King of the Jews.

And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.

And those passing by were blaspheming him, shaking their heads and saying, He who destroys the temple and builds it in three days,

Save yourself by coming down from the cross.

Likewise the chief priests, mocking one another with the scribes, said, He saved others; he cannot save himself.

The Christ, the King of Israel, let him come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe. And those crucified with him also insulted him.

And when the sixth hour had come, darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? which is translated, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

And some of those standing by, having heard, said, Look, he is calling Elijah.

But someone ran and, filling a sponge with vinegar, placed it on a reed and gave him a drink, saying, Let us see if Elijah comes to take him down.

And Jesus, having given a loud cry, expired.

And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

But when the centurion who stood opposite him saw that he had breathed his last in this way, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

There were also women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome,

Those who had followed him and served him while he was in Galilee, and many other women who had gone up with him to Jerusalem.

And when evening had come, since it was the preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself waiting for the kingdom of God, having courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

But Pilate was amazed if he was already dead, and having called the centurion, he asked him if he had died long ago.

And knowing from the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph.

And having bought a linen cloth, he took him down and wrapped him in the linen cloth and laid him in a tomb which had been cut out of rock, and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.

But Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph were watching where he was laid.
