And seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him.

And opening his mouth, he taught them, saying

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the gentle, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

Blessed are those who have been persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.

You are blessed when they insult you and persecute you and say every evil thing against you falsely because of me.

Rejoice and be glad, because your reward is great in the heavens; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt becomes foolish, with what will it be salted? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by people.

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

Nor do they light a lamp and put it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it shines for all in the house.

Let your light shine before people so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in the heavens.

Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have not come to abolish but to fulfill.

For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one iota or one stroke will pass away from the law until all is accomplished.

Therefore, whoever breaks one of these least commandments and teaches people so will be called least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches will be called great in the kingdom of the heavens.

For I say to you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of the heavens.

You have heard that it was said to the ancients, You shall not murder; but whoever murders will be liable to judgment.

But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; and whoever says to his brother, Raca, will be liable to the council; and whoever says, Morē, will be liable to Gehenna of fire.

Therefore, if you offer your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,

Leave your gift there before the altar and go first to be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

Be willing to be reconciled quickly with your opponent while you are on the way with him, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.

Truly I say to you, you will not come out from there until you have paid the last quadrans.

You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery.

But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

But if your right eye causes you to stumble, tear it out and throw it away from you. It is better for you that one of your members perish than for your whole body to be thrown into Gehenna.

And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away from you; it is better for you that one of your members perish than for your whole body to be thrown into Gehenna.

It was said, Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.

But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife except for the reason of sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Again you have heard that it was said to the ancients, You shall not swear falsely, but you shall pay to the Lord your oaths.

But I say to you, do not swear at all, neither by heaven, because it is the throne of God.

nor by the earth, because it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great king;

Do not swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.

But let your word be yes, yes, no, no; anything beyond these is from the evil one.

You have heard that it was said, Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.

But I say to you, do not resist the evil one; but whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

And to the one who wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have also your cloak.

And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.

Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away the one who wants to borrow from you.

You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

so that you may become children of your Father who is in the heavens, because he causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

Therefore you shall be perfect as your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
