Hear now these things, you elders, and give ear, all you inhabitants of the land: has such things happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers?
Tell it to your children, and your children to their children, and their children to another generation.
What the cutter-worm left, the locust ate; and what the locust left, the young locust ate; and what the young locust left, the mildew ate.
Wake up, you drunkards from your wine, and weep; lament, all you who drink wine to drunkenness, because joy and gladness have been taken away from your mouth.
For a nation has come up against my land, strong and without number; its teeth are the teeth of a lion, and its molars are of a lion’s whelp.
He has made my vine into destruction and my fig trees into splintering; searching, he thoroughly searched it out and threw it down; he made its branches white.
Lament to me like a bride girded with sackcloth over the husband of her virginity
The grain offering and the drink offering have been cut off from the house of the Lord; mourn, O priests, who minister at the altar.
For the fields have been miserable; let the land mourn, because the grain has been miserable; the wine has dried up, the oil has diminished
The farmers have dried up; mourn, lands, over wheat and barley, because the harvest from the field has perished.
The vine has dried up, and the fig trees have shriveled; pomegranate and palm and apple tree, and all the trees of the field have dried up, because the sons of men have put to shame joy.
Gird yourselves and lament, O priests; mourn, O ministers of the altar; enter, sleep in sackcloth, O ministers to God, for offering and drink offering have been withheld from the house of your God.
Sanctify a fast, proclaim a healing, gather all the elders, all the inhabitants of the land, into the house of your God, and cry out to the Lord earnestly
Alas, alas, alas for the day, for the day of the Lord is near, and as misery from misery it will come.
Before your eyes food has been cut off from the house of your God, joy and gladness
The heifers have skipped about on their feeding troughs; storehouses have been made to vanish, wine presses have been dug down, because grain has dried up.
What shall we lay up for ourselves? The herds of cattle have wept, because there was no pasture for them, and the flocks of sheep have perished.
To you, Lord, I will cry, because fire has consumed the beautiful things of the wilderness, and flame has kindled all the trees of the field.
And the beasts of the field looked up to you, because the channels of waters were dried up, and fire devoured the beautiful things of the wilderness.
